***I’ve actually become very interested in disaster preparedness as of late. Here’s one of the sights I go to for research on the latest products: beprepared.com

Launching Red Sociology 2.0!

I want to first thank everyone for all the support they have give us since we created this group blog. I myself could have never predicted what has happen with Red Sociology and I’m still amazed at the support of our fellow bloggers, organizers, friends, and of course readers. With that said, I would like to announce Red Sociology 2.0. With this revamp of our website, we want to make it both more friendly and add content that will expand our reader base and conversations we have here. Here are our new features we will be rolling out through this week:

New Writers!

I would like to introduce to the world Marty Droll and Mike Rausch, our two newest writers. Both of them have had chances to write pieces for Red Sociology so rather than me bluring out their bios (which will be up this week), head over and check out some of their articles:

Weekly Features

Each of our writers have or are going to shortly be rolling out their new weekly columns. Each of us have picked topics that interests us that we think that you the reader will also be interested in. Below is the list of our new weekly columns:

  • William Richardson (Editor in Chief)
    • “Breaking the Chains”: A column about black liberation topics as well as race and the Left in general (Being Black in the Revolution articles will be folder into this one) ~Mondays~
    • “Let’s Be Clear”: A continuation of the series which seeks to clarify and explore commonly misused terms in political, economic, and social discourse ~Wednesdays~
  • KaylaJo O’Lone Hahn
    • “Furious Feminist Fridays”: Articles concerning the struggle against sexism, misogyny, and patriarchy in all it’s forms ~Fridays~
  • Rick Gunderman
    • “Red North”: Red North focuses on issues related to communists in the United States and Canada, using Marxism-Leninism as a theoretical guide. Red North seeks to encourage the exploration of history, current events and political theory in an honest and progressive way. ~Sundays~
  • Mike Rausch
    • “Another Look”: This column will focus on looking back at historical events and situations from a Marxist-Leninist perspective.  ~Saturdays~

Red Sociology Academy

The last and biggest project we are launching is the Red Sociology Academy. It is an online encyclopedia including definitions and short explanation of political terms and ideas. The purpose of this Academy is to provide for free resources and pieces that will help people build up their critical mind and learn more about the world around them. We hope that this academy will on one hand serve as a space of learning as well as a curator and collector of information from around the internet so people have a central place to come to get info and take info to other places. We encourage anyone who is open to writing pieces for the Academy to contact us.

We hope everyone enjoys all our new features and feel free to contact us about any questions, ideas or concerns you may have here: http://redsociology.com/article-or-idea-submissions/

P.S. we will also be rolling out a new website layout in the next few days as well as a new logo so look out for that!

Self-Hate and Gangsta Rap Names [BTC]

The real Rick Ross on the left and the rapper Rick Ross on the right

Not too long ago I was in the car listening to some random song on my local hip-hop station and the DJ mentioned Big Sean and Ludacris for some reason and I had the random thought, “wtf is big about Sean and some of the stuff Ludacris says is indeed ludicrous“. Don’t ask why I initially though what I did (maybe I was already pissed off about something or another), but it did get me thinking about some lingering issues I’ve always had with hip hop and rap music, stage names. In doing some thinking and some looking around the Internets, I have only reinforced my deep-seated hatred of mainstream rap music based on its narcissism, misogyny, and destructive materialism. The thing that really kills me is that one can figure all that out about rap music just from the names of the people who make the music. One can go into a whole triad about how destructive mainstream, corporate controlled, rap music can be but I will just show you one example of naming trends in rap music and what that says about the genre in general. Happy Birthday KaylaJo!

I want to take some time this morning to say happy birthday to one of our writers, KaylaJo O’Lone-Hahn. She has been an incredible asset to Red Sociology since she came on with us a few months ago. She will be helping to lead some big changes we are planning for this summer and fall and I’m excited to see what surprises and new great articles she will have for us in the meantime. To honor her coolness why don’t you check out some of her articles and her bio today.

Her Bio: http://redsociology.com/authors/kaylajo/

All her articles: http://redsociology.com/author/survivorsolidarityzachandkaylajo/

And my favorite article and her first one with Red Sociology on the Occupy movement and sexual violence: http://redsociology.com/2012/01/13/on-political-movements-occupy-and-rape/
